Moomaw Family Farm
17281 S Clackamas River Dr, Oregon City, OR, 97045
About
Nathan and Amanda Moomaw raise pigs, chickens, sheep, and rabbits for families in and around Portland, Oregon. We started the farm in 2013, and have been working every day to produce delicious pasture-raised meat for our CSA members ever since. We also partner with other like-minded small scale farmers in the area who raise animals on pasture. We are located in Oregon City, just 10 miles south of Portland. We provide the absolute best living conditions, which results in meat that is tastier, safer, and more nutritious.

Farming Practices
Every decision places the well-being of the animals as the top priority. Our animals live outdoors and are moved around the pastures using rotational grazing. When raised in this way, they are naturally happy, healthy, and a joy to work with. We spend time with our animals on a daily basis. In many ways, they're more like pampered pets than livestock, and their lives are stress-free from beginning to end.
We closely manage our animals and land in a sustainably healthy way, so that we are not dependent on medications, poisons, or dangerous chemicals. We support diverse and healthy pastures through the rotational grazing of our animals; and in turn the health of the animals is supported by being moved regularly. Additionally, we're planting hundreds of trees into our pastures, such as hazelnuts, apples, and service-berries. These trees will provide food and shade for the animals, as well as diverse habitat for wildlife and native pollinators. By cultivating lush and diverse habitats on our farm, we can produce food for people and support increased biodiversity on the same pieces of land. We believe the marriage of farming and nature conservation is one of the best ways to achieve a truly sustainable future.
Good soil is the foundation of a productive farm, a diverse ecosystem, and a stable climate. On our farms, biologically active soil is generated and held in place by grasses, plants, and trees. Animals grazing those plants return nutrients to the land, which furthers the health of the soil and plants in the pastures. Having animals outside on pasture year-round means we don't have to construct or power large buildings in which to house the animals, which means our energy and materials use is minuscule compared to most livestock operations. Our farm is also only 10 miles from Portland, which means our entire distribution chain from farm to plate uses only 1,000 gallons of gas per year! Grazing animals on land with perennial grasses and trees is a remarkably effective way of pulling carbon out of the air. The fact that we raise all our animals outside on pasture combined with our minimal use of fossil fuels, means the meat we produce is almost certainly carbon negative!
